Wondering when to book your Maasai Mara safari? We break down what you can expect in every month of the year โ€” from the Great Migration to the green season magic.

This article contains expert insights from James Omondi, Lead Safari Guide & Co-Founder at Stefran Tours & Safaris, with 18 years of experience guiding across East Africa.

Quick Answer: The Best Months to Visit

The Maasai Mara is spectacular year-round โ€” unlike some reserves that go quiet in the off-season, the Mara has resident predators, large elephant herds, and over 450 bird species no matter when you visit. That said, timing your visit right can make the difference between a great safari and an absolutely unforgettable one.

  • July โ€“ October: Peak season. Great Migration river crossings. 5-star experiences but higher prices and more vehicles at sightings.
  • January โ€“ March: Dry season. Excellent predator sightings. Far fewer tourists. 15โ€“25% lower prices. Our personal favourite.
  • June: Migration begins arriving. Good weather, pre-peak prices, and early crossings possible.
  • November โ€“ December: Green season. Lush landscapes, newborn animals, and best photography light. Lower crowd levels.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

January & February โ€“ The Hidden Gem

These are our most underrated months. The short dry season after the December rains brings excellent visibility, grass that's short enough to spot predators, and practically zero tourist crowds. The Mara's resident lion prides are incredibly active, and cheetah sightings peak in January when the impala calving brings a feast for predators.

Prices are typically 15โ€“25% lower than peak season. You can often secure private vehicles without the premium charge. Our guides call this period "the insider's window" โ€” experienced safari-goers who know the Mara come in January and February precisely because everyone else doesn't.

July โ€“ October โ€“ The Migration Spectacle

If witnessing the Great Wildebeest Migration river crossings is your primary goal, July through October is when you need to be here. From late June, vast columns of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle begin arriving from the Serengeti. The drama peaks in August when crossings can occur multiple times a day.

Important to understand: river crossings are never guaranteed on any specific day. The herds move on their own schedule โ€” they'll queue at the banks for hours, sometimes days, before taking the plunge. Our guides position you at the crossings with expert knowledge built up over years of reading herd behaviour, but no operator can guarantee a crossing on any given game drive.
